Around 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police report they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then found many other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests show the substance was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; investigators are not yet cognizant of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials said they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.
A senior representative said the attack rendered him stunned and had to be solved rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he stated on a platform, mentioning the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
