The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.
This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 8 miles from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, prompting him to enact a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, the capital city.
The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and return him to office.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
